The Castine Historical Society’s 2026 Annual Meeting will be held on August 20 at the Castine Inn at 33 Main Street from 4 to 6 pm. The meeting is free and open to the public. Due to space constraints the in-person portion of the event is limited to 60 people. If unable to attend in person, watch the event live on our YouTube Channel. Hear about our accomplishments this year, along with updates, and a look forward to next year. The program begins with a brief business meeting. During this time attendees can learn more about the Historical Society’s yearly work in the area of exhibits, collection acquisitions, care of the buildings, fundraising, and finances.

Following the business meeting, staff will give a show and tell of new donations to the permanent collection. The event ends with a social hour with light refreshments.

2027 Board Member Election

This year, CHS members not in attendance in person may vote by emailing admin@castinehistoricalsociety.org or by calling the CHS during business hours at 207-326-4118 no later than 12 pm on August 20.

The 2026 election includes three items:

1. Approve the 2026 new Board of Directors slate
2. Approve the second term for two current board members
3. Approve 2025 Annual Meeting Minutes

Two individuals have been nominated by the CHS Board of Directors to serve a three-year term. Below are their photographs and bios.

Penny Carlhian

Growing up in Concord Massachusetts, then living and working in Boston and Charlestown and now residing in Castine, most of my life has been spent in towns with important rolls in the American Revolution. During our careers in design and construction, my husband Marc and I discovered Castine, periodically renting off neck. In 2016 we purchased our house on Green Street intending to spend our summers here. After finding that we spent most of our year here, we became full time residents in 2020. Since then, I have enjoyed serving on CHS committees, working with its collection of objects, staff and fellow members.

Pamela Scully

Pamela Scully was the Candler Dobbs Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and African Studies at Emory University. She has her Ph.D. in history from the University of Michigan. Professor Scully’s research interests focus on gender history. She is past-president of the Association for Undergraduate Education at Research Universities, and a member of the editorial board of the Oxford Encyclopedia of African Women’s History and of The Journal of Southern African Studies. She is on the advisory board of Social Dynamics. She is co-convener of the Coursera online course Understanding Violence and the Journeys to Education Teach-Out, focusing on diverse experiences of education, including that of First-Generation students. She has served as Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs at Emory, and as Deputy Editor of the Women’s History Review and as Treasurer and Secretary of the International Federation for Research in Women’s History.
