What did the Declaration of Independence mean in 1776? What does it mean to us today?

This is a complex and fascinating question to consider as we approach the 250th commemoration of its creation.

This discussion-based program invites participants to build a deeper understanding of this foundational document through dialogue, engaging with both its aspiration and challenging content. We will be guided by Dr. Liam Riordan, Adelaide and Alan Bird Professor of History, Department Chair at the University of Maine, along with staff from the Wilson Museum and Castine Historical Society. Please note that this will be a participatory program, and all attendees will be expected to actively engage. Some details are still under development, and we will reach out to registered participants with any updates.
