The Castine Historical Society Announces the Opening of the 2009 Summer Exhibit
CASTINE'S ART FROM THE PAST
with an Ice Cream Social at the Abbott School on the Castine Common
Sunday June 28, 4-6pm
The new exhibit this summer at the Castine Historical Society is an extension of last summer's exhibit ON THE WATERFRONT: CASTINE'S ART FROM THE PAST but with a different format. The ON THE WATERFRONT requirement has been eliminated, therefore, we are now able to include a broad selection of works created by deceased artists who had connections with Castine or the surrounding areas of the Bagaduce River. Some of the artists represented were local residents while others visited upon occasion. Oil paintings, watercolors, sketches, line drawings, pastels, lithographs, sculptures, carvings, metal work, folk art and more will be featured.
While some of the images will, of necessity, be reproductions, most will be originals. Through the interest and generosity of several Board members and community members the content of the exhibit has been expanded. Various artists whose works will be displayed include Fitz Henry (Hugh) Lane, Stow Wengenroth, Maurice Prendergast, Marsden Hartley, Thomas Fransioli, and N. W. Coombs. More recent works by Clark Fitz-Gerald, Frank Hamabe, Judy Payne, Jay Pratt, Cam Petri, Janet Hughes, Mary Kirk, Martha Ferguson, Alan Ferguson, Bernice Hall, Dorothy Blake, Ruth Lyon, Do Flash Bourne, Paul Stearns, Margaret Gregorie, Earl Bakeman, George Motoyka, Don Buttfield, Carolyn Schenk, and others.
The Maine State Museum in Augusta has agreed to loan the Historical Society several pieces from their Allie Ryan Collection, including two ship paintings by William Pierce Stubbs, who was born in Bucksport, ME in 1842. The Historical Society will display from its collection examples of original watercolors by Castine's native son Noah Brooks, who traveled extensively and visually recorded many of his journeys with paint and paintbrush. Original works created in the late 1930's and early 1940's by Works Progress Administration (WPA) Artists Waldo Peirce, Alzira Peirce, Barrie Barstow Greenbie, and Philip Von Saltza will also be included.
Contributing organizations include the above-mentioned Maine State Musuem, Wilson Museum, Maine Maritime Academy, and the Farnsworth Art Museum.
The exhibit promises to be a visual delight with interesting historical commentary. Including the opening reception on Sunday, June 28, the exhibit will be free and open to the public from July 1 through Labor Day. The Castine Historical Society hours are 10am-4pm Tuesday-Saturday; 1-4pm Sunday; closed Monday. Also on view is the permanent exhibit "The Penobscot Expedition" and the Castine Bicentennial Quilt.
